Your sofa is the hardest-working piece of furniture in the house. People sit on it daily, pets curl up on it, snacks happen on it, and all of that soaks in slowly enough that you stop noticing. Then a guest sits down, you see it through their eyes, and suddenly the cushions look tired.
So how often should upholstery actually be cleaned? For most households, once a year. But like carpet, the right answer depends on how the piece gets used.
What your couch absorbs
Fabric furniture acts like a giant filter. Body oils transfer from skin every time someone leans back. Dust and dead skin settle into the weave. In South Florida, humidity keeps everything slightly damp, which helps odors and allergens take hold. None of it shows at first, and then the headrest and armrests go a shade darker than the rest.
Vacuuming the cushions helps with the loose surface debris. The oils and the deep dust need heat and extraction to come out.
How often, by household
- Light use, no pets. Once a year keeps fabric fresh.
- Kids or pets. Every 6 to 8 months. Oils and accidents build faster, and fabric holds pet dander.
- Allergies in the home. More frequent cleaning genuinely cuts down the allergens living in the cushions.
- A light-colored or high-use sofa. Watch the armrests and headrest, those wear first and tell you when it is time.
Read the tag before you clean
Every piece of upholstery has a cleaning code on a tag, usually under a cushion:
- W means water-based cleaning is safe.
- S means solvent only, no water.
- WS means either is fine.
- X means vacuum only, no liquid at all.
This matters because using water on an S-coded fabric can leave rings or shrink it. We check the tag on every job and match the method to the material, whether it is microfiber, cotton, linen, wool, or suede.
What a professional clean does
We pre-treat the spots, then use controlled hot-water extraction or a solvent method depending on the fabric, lifting the oils and dust out instead of pushing them deeper. The cushions dry soft, the color comes back, and the piece smells clean again.
If your sofa has started looking tired, or you just want it fresh before guests, reach out and we will match the right method to your fabric.
